PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

Medical decisions should not be made based on advertising. Consult a physician on the benefits and risks of particular medical marijuana products. PTSD is often associated with war veterans but can also happen with people who have experienced serious injuries, or accidents and even violence. We have a lot of veterans we serve but also have people whom have been In accidents and may not know that they suffer from PTSD.

People Affected:

  • Veterans

  • Assault Victims (Physical, Sexual, and Verbal)

  • Car accidents

  • Sports Injures

  • Life Threatening Attacks

People with PTSD may relive their experience through nightmares or flashbacks. They might as well feel like they are detached from people in their lives and choose to avoid people or places that remind them of their experience.

PTSD is known to improve over time but mostly treated with psychotherapy or mental health counseling. All though cannabis is not FDA approved to help PTSD many people who have been diagnosed report positive effects.

A 2018 study showed that CBD consumed immediately after a traumatic event, may impede the brain’s ability to form the memories that could cause PTSD. It is possible that CBD affects the hippocampus in the brain to reduce hyperactivity of the Amygdala.

Hippocampus – Component of the brain that plays a major part in how the brain stores information from short-term memory loss and long-term memory loss.

Amygdala – Located next to the hippocampus. Shown to be a primary role in processing memory, decision making, and emotional responses.

2020 Study found that people with PTSD who were exposed to THC had lower-related amygdala reactivity versus those who were not. In other words, they had decreased rates of fear and anxiety in response to fear-inducing stimuli. Research states that low doses of THC, or a combination of THC and CBD can improve the rate of extinction for traumatic memories and reduce anxiety responses.

PTSD patients should look for full-spectrum products with low THC. Buying flower is optimal option because it allows you to benefit from the terpenes and cannabinoids that cause the entourage effect.
